Tips to Help Your Pet Move Without Distressing Them Too Much

Moving your pet with you to your new home shouldn’t be too much trouble if you know how to keep them calm and content throughout. Furthermore, if you're moving to an area with wide open spaces and lots to explore, you probably won’t need to coax them that much to explore the beautiful outdoors. For tips on how to keep your pet calm during the moving process, check out this article shared by Adam the Dog Trainer.

Comfort is Key

Make sure that your pet is as comfortable as possible, and they’ll be happier already.

  • Take your pet’s creature comforts with them so there is something familiar. Or buy new ones, such as a new quality dog bed or pet crate, to ensure he’s transported in comfort.

  • Make sure he has lots to keep him occupied. Chew toys are an excellent choice for mental stimulation.

  • If you plan on hiking with your furry companion by your side, choose a retractable leash that’ll keep him safely strapped to you at all times.

    Make Your Pet a Priority

As a pet owner, you probably already make your pet a priority. But putting your pet first can be challenging when moving when you don't have as much time as you did before.

    • Reduce your hours or work remotely if you find that you’re coming up short on spending quality time with your pet.

    • Make each day fun to preoccupy them in the beginning. Ever tried a doggy day spa

    • Make sure they have ample company after moving in. If you’re not there, ask family or friends if they wouldn’t mind pet-sitting for a bit.

    • Research pet insurance so you can have peace of mind should your pet need medical care. Begin by looking for pet insurance and reviewing different policies.

    • Really look at the area into which you want to move. Make sure that the cost is reasonable for you and that you can find someplace pet friendly, preferably with dog parks and well-reviewed veterinarians nearby.

    Follow a Schedule

Pets love routine, which is why you should do your best to follow a schedule they’re used to to help them feel secure at all times.

    • Walk, feed, and play with them at times during the day they’re used to.

    • If you want to stay on top of this, there are pet apps that can help you look after the health and well-being of your pet, such as Whistle, Petcube, and Puppy.

    • If you feel like you need help staying on track from a personal point of view, a digital diary can help you diarize your day's events better.

    Follow a Schedule

Moving your pet to a new city can be a breeze if you plan for it. Moreover, it’s your health and wellness that your pet will also be paying attention to. So, be sure to take care of this first so your pet senses this and can be happier too. Make sure that you’ve scoped out the area to ensure it’s a good fit for you and your pet, and consider signing your pooch up for training or behavioral consultation with Adam the Dog Trainer to get everyone off to a great start.
